How to Support Her When She is Unexpectedly Expecting

Many of us are brought up believing that life is a gift, but when the unexpected happens, it can feel like a nightmare. This is especially true when you think or find out you are pregnant unexpectedly. Depending on your situation there are many feelings that come with realizing you are pregnant. Initial feelings can include fear, sadness, and anxiety. There can also be feelings of joy and excitement. What if it’s your friend that is pregnant unexpectedly? How can you help comfort and support her?

Be Available

If your friend just found out she is pregnant, she is probably in shock, not thinking clearly, and may feel like she is losing control. Be observant of how she is responding to you. Give her your undivided attention. Listen to her and show her you care.

Respond Positively

In the face of a crisis, it’s important not to respond negatively. Continuously keeping the conversation encouraging and uplifting will help her clear the fog that has suddenly set in and caused this sense of losing control.

Offer to Help

If you are able to, offer to help. Make plans to assist in specific activities such as helping her around the house or with errands. This will help her feel loved and cared for, and she will know you will be there to support her after she has the baby.

Support System

Set up a time every week for you to talk to see how she is doing. If you are able to, see if you can accompany her on doctor visits or helping her plan at home for the baby. Setting up a registry and shopping with her for the items she will need is another way to be there for her during the pregnancy.

Reassure Her

Remember to tell her that everything will be okay. Let her know it is okay to be happy that she is pregnant. Continue to show interest and excitement throughout her pregnancy. This will reassure her of the support she has with you.

Encourage Her

Let her know you know she can make it through this. Encourage her to do activities that are fun and healthy. Remind her that she can still enjoy the things she loves to do and that there are support groups that help women work through the emotions of unplanned pregnancies. There are also professionals to help with this as well.

An unexpected pregnancy can be frightening. If you have a friend in this situation, reach out to her. Be there for her. She could probably use your support. These are just a few tips you can do to help her through a scary and exciting time in her life. Being there for her will remind her that she is not alone and that she is loved.
