What is Abortion?

Abortion is a procedure that ends an existing pregnancy, either through medication or surgery. There are real risks to consider with each type of abortion procedure.

To know what type of abortion you qualify for and to get the answers you need, confirm your pregnancy with an ultrasound.

Medical Abortion

Often known as the abortion pill, medical abortion involves two different drugs that work together to terminate a pregnancy: Mifepristone and misoprostol. Medical abortion is only for women up to 10 weeks pregnant.

First, mifepristone blocks the womb from absorbing progesterone (the pregnancy hormone). Blocking this hormone prevents the embryo from implanting and growing, ending the pregnancy. Then, misoprostol is taken and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy through the vagina.

The Risks of Medical Abortion

Common risks of medical abortion include incomplete abortion, heavy and prolonged bleeding, infection, fever, and digestive system discomfort.

Surgical abortion

A surgical abortion involves anesthesia and dilating the opening to the uterus called the cervix. Then, a small suction tube is placed into the uterus and removes the fetus/related pregnancy material from the uterus. It’s an invasive process.

The Risks of Surgical Abortion

Potential risks of surgical abortion include:

  • Damage to the womb or cervix
  • Uterine perforation
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infection of the uterus or fallopian tubes
  • Scarring on the inside of the uterus
  • Reaction to the medicines or anesthesia, such as problems breathing
  • Not removing all of the tissue, requires another procedure

Is Adoption for Me?

An adoption is a great option if you’re second-guessing abortion. Maybe you’re not ready to parent, and you desire to give your child a great life.

There are three types of adoption plans to choose from: open, closed, and semi-open adoption. The adoption plan you choose is dependent on how much communication you’d like with your child and the adoptive parents.
