Making an Informed Decision When Considering Abortion

After days, or maybe weeks of uncertainty, you’ve finally determined that you are indeed pregnant. Now it’s time to consider next steps. You have several options, and abortion is one of them. It’s important you know the facts about abortion so you may make an informed decision if this is one of the options you’re considering for your pregnancy

First, it’s best to get an ultrasound to ensure you have a normal pregnancy. If the ultrasound determines that you have a tubal pregnancy, you may need immediate medical attention.

Second, before you can determine if an abortion is the route you want to take with your pregnancy you need to check your risks for a miscarriage and how far along in your pregnancy you are. This will determine the type of abortion you’d have.

Every pregnancy is different. Depending on your pregnancy and the length of your pregnancy you may require a surgical procedure to have an abortion. This entails opening the cervix and placing a suction tube inside the uterus. Suction is then used to remove all remanence of the pregnancy, including the fetus. Recovery time after the procedure is needed due to bleeding, cramping, and medication that may cause drowsiness.

As with all surgeries, there are risks involved with surgical abortions. Possible risks include:

  • Damage to the cervix
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Damage or infection to the uterus
  • Scarring

In addition to these risks, if the procedure does not fully remove all pregnancy tissue, you may need to have a second surgical procedure performed.
